Police Launch Probe into Death of UWI Student

The St. Andrew Central Police have launched an intensive investigation into the death of a 20-year-old student at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, early Thursday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Victoria Brown Hanley, of Mandeville, Manchester, a resident of George Alleyne Hall.

Reports indicate that sometime after 1:00 a.m., Hanley’s roommate, a medical student, left their shared room. When she returned about five hours later, she reportedly found Hanley lying face down with a scarf tightly wrapped around her neck.

The roommate immediately alerted campus security and attempted to loosen the scarf. Hanley was later transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A senior police commander confirmed that a team of 11 detectives from the Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB), including scene-of-crime personnel, visited the campus Thursday afternoon to process the scene and gather evidence.

Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage from the hall as part of ongoing efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
