The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has issued a Severe Weather Alert for the entire island, effective until 5 p.m. on Thursday.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, the Met Service reported that a strong tropical wave is currently moving across the southeastern Caribbean Sea and is showing signs of better organisation as it tracks westward.
Forecasters warn that conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the system to develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next day or two as it moves through the central Caribbean.
Given the system’s current trajectory, the Met Service says a tropical storm watch may be issued as the tropical wave moves closer to Jamaica.
Safety Advisory
Fishers and small craft operators, particularly those navigating southern coastal waters, are being urged to remain on high alert for deteriorating sea conditions, including thunderstorms and strong gusty winds beginning Wednesday and continuing throughout the week.
Residents should prepare for periods of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across several parishes starting Wednesday afternoon and lasting into the weekend.
Fishers on the cays and banks are advised to begin evacuation preparations in case conditions worsen.
The Meteorological Service says it will continue to closely monitor the system and provide updates as necessary.
