Westmoreland woman charged after neighbour suffers severe burns in alleged attack

A 22-year-old Westmoreland woman has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm after allegedly dousing her neighbour with a burning substance during an attack late last month.

The accused, Shamara Williams of Hatfield district in Savanna-la-Mar, is charged in connection with the assault of 34-year-old entrepreneur Altea Brown, also of Hatfield district, on Tuesday, September 23.

According to police reports, around 9:40 p.m., Brown was standing near her car along the roadway when Williams — with whom she had a prior dispute — allegedly approached and threw a dark-coloured liquid from a bottle onto her. The substance reportedly splashed onto Brown’s face, chest, and abdomen, causing severe burns and destroying her clothing.

Residents quickly rushed the injured woman to the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital, where she was admitted in serious but stable condition.

Williams reportedly fled the area following the incident but later surrendered to the police on Monday, October 6, accompanied by her attorney.

She has since been formally charged and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
