Jamaica is now under a tropical storm watch, as forecasters warn of the potential development of a tropical cyclone in the central Caribbean later Tuesday.
A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions could affect the island within 48 hours.
According to the Meteorological Service, satellite, radar, and surface data indicate that a low-pressure system over the central Caribbean Sea is becoming more organised, with a well-defined centre already generating winds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph).
Environmental conditions are expected to become increasingly favourable for development, and the system is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm later today as it lingers over the central Caribbean.
When the system approaches Jamaica, it is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and strong, gusty winds—possibly reaching tropical storm force—particularly across northeastern and southern parishes from late Wednesday into Thursday. Rainfall could persist through the weekend.
For marine interests, widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected, with strong winds possibly reaching tropical storm strength on Wednesday and Thursday, especially along the south coast and offshore areas.
Fishers on the cays and banks are urged to evacuate immediately and return to the mainland. Other small craft operators are advised to remain in port until conditions improve.
The Meteorological Service states that it will continue to monitor the system closely and urges the public to remain alert for further updates.
