A man who was shot during an alleged gun battle with police in Caymanas Bay, St Catherine, on Tuesday has succumbed to his injuries.
He has been identified as Rushawn “Russian” Gayle, a 24-year-old labourer from the community.
According to police reports, around 5:35 a.m., law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in the area when Gayle was accosted. He reportedly brandished a firearm and opened fire at the police, who returned fire, hitting him.
A Ruger Hi-Point 9mm pistol, along with a magazine containing six rounds, was allegedly recovered from the scene.
Gayle was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was admitted under police guard but later died while receiving treatment.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched an inquiry into the incident.
