JUTC developing special student card for rural school buses

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is developing a special student card equipped with a built-in security alert feature for use on rural school buses.

Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon announced the initiative during Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House. She encouraged parents to ensure their children are accompanied when registering for the new card.

The National Rural School Bus Programme, which was officially launched on September 8, currently has 60 buses operating islandwide. Dr. Morris Dixon said she is pleased with the programme’s progress and its positive impact on students’ access to safe transportation.

Students will continue to ride free of charge until the end of October, after which a subsidised fare of $50 per trip will take effect.

Meanwhile, the government plans to expand the fleet, with an additional 40 buses expected by November.
