The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into a fatal police shooting that occurred in Montego Bay, St. James, over the weekend.

The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Romar “Maro” Wallace, of Mount Carey.
According to reports, around 9 p.m. on Saturday, police officers were on foot patrol along Railway Lane when they spotted a motorcycle carrying two men. The officers signaled for the men to stop, but instead, the menallegedly opened fire.
The police took cover and returned fire. During the exchange, Wallace was shot, and a firearm reportedly taken from him was seized. His companion managed to escape.
Wallace was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Law enforcement sources say Wallace had been under police surveillance for a long time. He was previously arrested and charged on July 6, 2022, with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Investigators also linked him to a robbery ring accused of multiple thefts across the parish.
INDECOM has since confirmed that its team is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
