Driver Escapes Injury After Crash Linked to Spilled Construction Material in St Thomas

A minivan driver is counting his blessings after narrowly escaping serious injury when his vehicle skidded off the White Horses main road, near Shady Spring in St. Thomas, on Wednesday evening.

According to police reports, the crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when the vehicle lost traction, veered off the roadway, and plunged into a nearby ditch. The driver sustained only minor injuries.

Investigators believe the accident was caused by spilled construction material—likely sediments or concrete mix—left on the road by trucks transporting building supplies. The issue has become a persistent hazard in the area, contributing to several similar incidents in recent months.

In May, Minister with responsibility for works Robert Nesta Morgan urged the police to step up enforcement against truck drivers who allow materials such as cement, concrete, and gravel to spill along public roadways.

He reminded them that under Section 97 of the Road Traffic Act (2018), it is a criminal offence to deposit materials like garbage, oil, or concrete mix on roads. Violators can face fines of up to $300,000 or three months’ imprisonment, and authorities are also empowered to recover repair costs through civil proceedings in the parish court.
