St Mary detainee who escaped from hospital back in police custody

Herbie Ballentine, who escaped police custody while receiving treatment at the Port Maria Hospital in St. Mary last Friday, has turned himself in to the authorities.

The St. Mary police confirmed that Ballentine, otherwise called “Junior,” surrendered at the Islington Police Station on Monday afternoon, accompanied by his attorney.

Superintendent Anthony Wallace, head of the St. Mary Police Division, said Ballentine escaped custody on Friday, October 3, 2025, after being treated for injuries sustained during a confrontation with the police.

According to Superintendent Wallace, Ballentine managed to flee after overpowering an investigator from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), who had temporarily removed his handcuffs so he could sign a document.

Ballentine is expected to face further questioning regarding both his initial charges and the circumstances surrounding his escape. Superintendent Wallace reiterated the division’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and accountability through thorough and transparent investigations.
